We are all paying for the square footage where we live, either in the price of the house or the cost of rent, and sacrificing some of that space to a remote setup means either getting a larger place or sacrificing some of what we're paying for.
There are some real financial benefits to the worker, of course, as the costs of commuting are substantial in both direct expenses and time lost. But we should not ignore other parts of the equation in figuring how we do this.
(Also, particularly for those living in smaller places, the impact of the rest of the family having to act like they're in mommy's workspace, particularly for young kids in the after school hours, is considerable.)
