Not every UX project is the same. How do you know what processes and artifacts to include in your UX strategy? I start by asking myself:

"What will happen if I don't do anything?"

This may be a negative way to look at it, but it gets me into a problem-solving mindset.

I can't decide what to do out of all the unlimited possibilities until I know what might happen if I don't do a single thing. "What will happen if I don't do anything?" helps me figure out what value I can bring to the project.

To be clear, I'm not talking about identifying end-user problems, but internal process problems. As a lead designer, I'm not directly solving end-user problems; rather, I support other designers in doing so and create a UX strategy to make sure they can do so successfully.

Example: If I know a project involves many different teams, one answer to "What will happen if I don't do anything?" might be "Design work could get misaligned between teams, creating conflicts and inconsistencies."

The next step is to fill in the blank:
"To prevent this, I need to _"

Then I brainstorm WHAT things I can do to prevent the future imagined problem, and HOW I can do those things.

In this example, it might be "I need to provide coordination between the teams' design work," & how I do this might be to set up a chat channel, schedule recurring design update meetings, etc.

Now I know exactly what to do, so I can start writing it down in a UX strategy 🎉

To prevent PROBLEM, I need to: ➡️ PREVENTION
How will I do PREVENTION? ➡️ TASKS
