Problem Labour still have is Blair made winning look easy & lulled them into believing they were the default party of govt because the majority hate the Tories as much as they do. Neither are true. https://twitter.com/britainelects/status/1359834361361805312
But when you believe so wholeheartedly in your own moral rectitude, as many Labour people do, it can be hard to accept your party is capable of inspiring at least as much hate in voters as the Tories. And that was before a decade of cementing voters worst fears.
Keir Starmer is a massive improvement on Jeremy Corbyn but he’s only a short way up the very steep slope back to govt & there is nothing to say the party ever has to make it to the top of the slope again. It isn’t preordained.
Actually, hate is probably the wrong word. Hate is more for activists. What voters feel is probably fear. Right now voters fear Labour more than they fear the Tories. They fear Labour will not protect the things they value.
This is impossible for many Labour activists to understand. It does not compute. They find the idea the have to dispel fears ridiculous because they think muddle headed voters are the easy prey of a duplicitous right wing press. It’s not easy to see how these attitudes change.
