Doing a thread on my ski trip to Gulmarg, and some bits on Pahalgam and Srinagar. Some pictures and recommendations too. Save, RT or better still plan your travels to Kashmir. :)
After years of traveling across the world, hunting for cold places, snow and all kinds of adventure I can say that Gulmarg has been one of the best travel experiences of my life thus far.
Mumbai and Srinagar are connected by flights all across seasons but plan your winter trip in advance to avoid expensive deals. Currently Go Air and Indigo have direct flights.
Rest of the flight go via Delhi.

Due to a halt on international travel, Gulmarg is sold out until 31st March. So next time plan in advance.
It’s a good 2 hours away from Srinagar but the ride is comfortable and easy.

Srinagar airport on arrival is currently doing a rapid antigen covid test which hardly takes about 10 minutes after baggage collection.
If negative you go. If positive you will be asked to quarantine.

Head to the prepaid taxi counter and get a cab to a Tanmarg for INR 1800. At Tanmarg you’ll have to hail another cab to Gulmarg which is approx 800 bucks.
Most hotels aren’t so great tbh.
Personal recco - Grand Mumtaz, Shaw Inn, Highland park, Kolahoi greens.
Room service is bad everywhere. Opt for buffets deals pls.
Central heating only works at night so check with your hotel on additional heaters. -5 degrees is not fun indoors

Please only get a ski instructor though contacts. Literally everyone there is one and I personally didn’t have a good experience with one instructor.
Dm for numbers if you’d like. Cost about 2000-2500 for a whole day. Another 500-600 for your equipment. Opt for a helmet.

Skiing on baby slopes is amazing. Skiing from phase 1 depends on you and how much you can do with confidence.
Nevertheless visit Phase 1 by gondola. Cost approx 750 for a two way ride. Spend the day there but it’s at 10k feet so make sure you are comfy with that.

Phase 2 gondola at 14k feet is only recommended if you are in good health. Else totally avoid.
Snowmobiling in phase 1 is possible for anywhere between 1500-3000 and it’s totally worth it.

Give yourself atleast 5 days if you want to learn basics of skiing. I could only do for 3 days and honestly still craving for more. Make sure you have some form of fitness before you go.
Most hotels don’t serve non veg food because veg people traveling in groups don’t like it. Yes. Thats right. Speak to your hotel and clarify your needs in advance.
Back to Tanmarg should take another 800 bucks. Cabs are not too easy to find so save all the numbers from cabbies and local contacts to help you. A cab from Tanmarg to Pahalgam for a 2 day trip will cost anywhere between 6-8k depending on how much you haggle.
Skip Pahalgam in winters. Go back in summer. That’s it. That’s the tweet.
I stayed at the chinar resort for a cozy night and loved every bit. Especially the Himalayan trout. Heevan hotel is another very good option.

I wasn’t planning on staying in Srinagar but did. Definitely go to Dal lake. A 30 min ride cost 600 approx.
Later have a meal at lazeez or adhoos. You won’t regret this decision.

Srinagar has a good cafe scene. Books and bricks is the one I visited for a farewell treat.
Other cafes that people recommend were winterfell, liberty cafe.

Pl carry your meds and the right clothing. A lot of tourists fell sick because they thought it’s cool to carry a bomber jacket.
Layer up. Get water resistant jacket, pants and boots from Decathlon to have fun outdoors.

Take appropriate eye wear in winters. You need reflective shades to protect your eyes. Regular shades in snow especially while skiing will blind you and cause long term damage.
Lastly. Be nice to everyone there. Their livelihood is completely dependent on tourism. Don’t be an ass that screams and throws garbage all around. Respect and protect.
Lastly, I recommend pine spring, radisson and rose petal to stay in Srinagar. I can give a whole list of numbers if you need and are serious about your travel.
That’s all folks.

Oh. And about atms. There is only one J&k atm that works at the main market in Gulmarg. Recommend taking cash. All hotels accept cards and it works just fine.
In addition only airtel and jio postpaid works in Kashmir.
