THREAD: We’re marking the International Day of Women and Girls in Science by celebrating the wonderful #WomenInSTEM working at Cardiff University.

Find out more about 21 of our women in #STEM and their research for #WomenInScience Day 2021. 👇
Since moving into academia from industry, Deputy Vice-Chancellor @KarenHolford CBE FREng has helped to build the international reputation of acoustic emission research at #CardiffUni, with research resulting in improved safety monitoring of bridges and other structures.
Pro Vice-Chancellor for Research, Innovation & Enterprise @profkimgraham’s research focuses on understanding how distinct 🧠 circuits underpin different memory systems, and how damage to these networks influences risk and resilience to dementia across the lifespan.
Former Chief Scientific Adviser Prof Julie Williams CBE is an expert in the genetics of Alzheimer’s. She is Director of the @UKDRI in Cardiff. 🧠

Her collaborative discovery of 3 Alzheimer’s risk genes was recognised by @TIME as one of the top 10 medical breakthroughs of 2009.
Prof Valerie O’Donnell, Director of the Division of Infection and Immunity - @CUSystemsImmu Co-Director is distinguished for her discovery of inflammatory bioactive lipids generated by circulating blood cells.

She is an expert in the rapidly expanding area of lipidomics.
Dr Rhian Daniel [ @statnav] is a medical statistician with a focus on methods for learning about cause-effect relationships from observational data.

She was recently awarded a #SuffrageScience award in recognition of her scientific achievements and ability to inspire others.
Dr @EmmaYhnell lectures in a wide range of subjects @CUBiosciences covering neuroscience, biochemistry, molecular biology and disease mechanisms.

Her research focuses on neurodegenerative diseases, with a particular focus on Huntington's disease. 👇
Prof @kerryhood is the Director of @CTRCardiffUni, and a Senior Research Leader and a mentor for @ResearchWales.

Her research interests are in trial design, outcome measurement and research inclusion with a particular focus on complex trials.
Dr Helen Waller-Evans is a neuroscience lecturer at @CUMedicinesInst.

She has a particular interest in developing therapies that act on lysosomal proteins for use in psychiatric and neurological diseases.
Sophie Watson (BIOSI)
. @watsonse1 is a #CardiffUni PhD student who unlocks the strange secrets deep inside Arctic animals.

She studies the bacteria and parasites found in the guts of Arctic animals to see what we can learn about these species and their environment. 👇
Research Fellow Dr Tatyana Shelkovnikova’s research group aims to provide insights into the molecular underpinnings of RNA granule biology and its connection to human disease.
. @IsabelleDurance is the Director of @CUWaterResearch and @Gw4Water.

Her research blends large scale empirical analysis with smaller scale in-situ manipulations, to address pressing questions in relation to global water challenges.
Prof Marianne van den Bree focuses on genetic and environmental factors that play a role in the development of mental health disorders.

She's developed one of the world's largest research cohorts of individuals with neurodevelopmental genetic conditions.

Prof Carole Tucker from @cardiffPHYSX is a member of the Astronomy Instrumentation Group and has worked on a large number of far infrared and sub-millimetre projects.

Her expertise lies with the quasi-optical filter technology for which Cardiff is the sole provider worldwide.
Dr Katherine Dooley is an experimental physicist who specialises in developing the equipment needed to detect gravitational waves.

She is Co-Investigator on the £5m Quantum-Enhanced Interferometry collaboration which will use quantum technology to shed light on dark matter.
Prof Haley Gomez MBE [ @astrofairy]’s work explores the formation and evolution of cosmic dust.

She works on space dust in supernovae, in M31, in nearby galaxies and over recent cosmic time. 🔭

In 2018 she was awarded an MBE in recognition of her research and outreach work.
Prof Liana Cipcigan is leader of the Electric Vehicle Centre of Excellence @EngineeringCU.

She's an expert advisor to the UK Government’s Electric Vehicle Energy Taskforce and leader of the @EPSRC 'Decarbonising Transport through Electrification' network.
. @IreneAnthi is a fourth year PhD student and a cyber security research engineer @CompScienceCU.

She researches how machine learning methods can be used to defend industrial control systems and Internet of Things devices.
. @carolinelear’s research @CU_EARTH investigates feedbacks in the climate system, aiming to constrain the long-term sensitivity of continental ice sheets to changing environmental conditions, including CO2.
Dr Pan He's research @CU_EARTH explores how human behaviour affects the natural environment and examines how policy can lead to consumer behaviour change that improves sustainability.
Research Fellow @draditeemitra - @CU_EARTH is a botanist by first degree, an ecologist by virtue of her MSc degree and a systems dynamics modeller of plankton ecophysiology via her PhD and research activities.

She works at the interface of science, governance and the public.
Research Fellow @LCullenUnsworth is Director of @ProjectSeagrass, a charity advancing the conservation of seagrass through education, influence, research and action.

Her research focuses on coupled social-ecological systems and sustainability in the marine environment.
We would love to hear the Cardiff #WomenInSTEM who inspire you. 🔭 🧪 🦠
