I’ve gotta say it- I’m on Team Unify when it comes to the titles. As we are right now, there are more eyes on the us title space than ever. The NEVER title has been moulded into something unique and special, something Shingo achieved and I’m confident Tana will continue. #njnbg
The junior division is in a genuine golden era and could easily headline at the dome next year. Every title right now has a unique, distinct character that makes every title match so important; every title is THE top title to the one that holds it and challenges for it. #njnbg
So to me the big question is what does Naito do if he wins the ic title? Can anyone do what Shinsuke did in the current era? Does Naito want to hold the ‘Nakamura belt’? if that’s how it’s regarded, then it should be unified- nobody will be able to truly make it theirs otherwise.
BUT, and this is key to Naito’s challenge: Tetsuya Naito wanted the heavyweight and loathed the IC. He wanted both titles at WK14 and cost himself both at WK15. All because *the* most important thing to him is his legacy.
To me, that’s the motivating factor here. He could challenge for both, but chose one. Why the IC? Why not the heavy? So he can win the title that has, love or hate, moulded his LIJ career. And then finally make it not the Shinsuke belt but the Naito belt. #njnbg
Naito was the first double champ. He realizes he cannot, perhaps, be the last double champ. So what’s his career goal now? To be the *only* IC champ people talk about. #njnbg
