On this #InternationalDayOfWomenAndGirlsInScience I would like to take my year 10 science teacher who told me I wasn’t a good candidate for science A levels and raise you a BSc and 2 MRes’s in biology *makes raspberry noises*
To all those “geeky/nerdy” (what I used to get called) teenage girls who love science, YOU DO YOU! Science can take you to so many places, not just geographically but as a career so don’t let them hold you down!
I’m just going to drop some of my inspirational #WomenInSTEM to celebrate this #InternationalDayOfWomenAndGirlsInScience starting with my now ex-boss and all round gem @cass_hugill who has been a huge support in my career as a mentor and a friend!
Then @KasiaMajewski1 who kept me somewhat sane during my first MRes with her wonderful tales of Borneo and just happens to be an amazing science communicator, entomologist, lizardologist (I dunno) and now a newly turned mycologists!!
But there’s also @EmmaYhnell who is the reason I managed to find my new career in engagement and sci comm by taking the time to point me in all the right directions! And is just an all round top #womaninstem!
And @carladoesscicom who might not know what Ethernet cables are, but she’s an incredible science communicator... and has also taught me many things about snails!
Holla to my amazing intern @tiasalter25 who is finding her (many) feet with engagement and sci comm at the moment, whilst also smashing out a PhD in antibiotic resistance 🙌🏻🙌🏻
And not to forget @loisatuni whose coming to the end of her degree whilst simultaneously trying to empower people to make informed decisions about vaccines!
And also my amazing colleague @DrToniHo who has been instrumental in the covid-19 response in Scotland, but also with her collaborators in Malawi!
Gosh and can’t forget @stephmrainey whose an absolute Supermum and also working to rid the world of mosquitoes vectored viruses 💪🏻
We also have @MesserFiona who is an award winning fly sperm researcher, winning at life one fly sperm meme at a time!
And her supervisor @flyprofhelen who although biased, supported me to make the right decisions for me, which resulted in my leaving my PhD for my absolute dream career 🙌🏻
Next @cprthorley who has been another amazing role model for me as not only a public engagement professional but also as a person!
And @ScienceAmbass who is an absolute joy, but also a real inspiration of someone who can wade through any mess whilst holding others up high!
Similarly for @HanaAyoob who may not know it, but was a big part of me feeling welcome in the #scicomm family when I first started out attending scary conferences!
And @IvvetM who was the initiator of those big scary conferences (UKSFN20). Who is now going to share her amazing wealth of knowledge in the states!
Another amazing woman is @deepseadeb who not only amazes me with her incredible event management and absolute to pull everything from nothing, she’s also a scuba diver which obviously just makes her brilliant
