Maybe I’m missing something, but I don’t quite understand why on holidays the govt doesn’t say “of course it’s reasonable for people to book holidays for the summer, but we can’t give any guarantees on where we’ll be by then so you should make sure you can cancel/get a refund”.
Isn’t that the reality of the situation we’re in right now? It would be bonkers for govt to say “yes definitely book a holiday, all will be fine by then” but equally suggesting that no domestic or international travel at all will be allowed by then feels overly pessimistic.
That said, I think the media should probably also be framing this in a slightly more nuanced way as well rather than just asking ministers the straight question of whether we’ll be able to go on holiday in the summer and then pretending to be surprised that they don’t say yes.
Quite frankly, for many, summer holidays are not nearly as important as the question of when we can all see family again. I’d take a decade of rainy staycations for a hug off my mum right now!
