So I finally went full nerd and read The Silmarillion, which is alternatively fun and a dreary slog. But if you've never done likewise I'm here to tell you that it has the BEST Tolkien character ever, one I never heard of, who does not appear in any of the movies.

Is doggo.
His name is HUAN and he's a giant magic-adjacent dog gifted by one of the Valar (basically gods) to the early Elves. He appears in the Beren and Lúthien chapter. Besides being an extremely good boy, he's metal as hell. He fights + utterly fucks up all of Sauron's demon-wolves.
Seriously, Sauron sends progressively bigger demon-wolves at Huan and he kills every one of them. Then Sauron makes himself into the biggest, most demonic werewolf of all and attacks. Haun rips him to shreds and Sauron shrieks in pain, has to abandon that form and gtfo of there.
There's a lot more of him kicking ass and saving the day but one non-battle thing I love is that for some weird reason, Huan is allowed to speak... but only three times in his life. WTF Valar.

(btw a similar odd rule exists for Duffy the cat, hero of the film A TALKING CAT!?!)
When Huan does speak, he is eloquent and wise, gives solid advice. 14/10 gives great counsel would listen again.

Anyway Huan is the greatest and most unsung Tolkien character. If he never appears in a movie there is no justice or goodness. I mean, even less than we already know.
