Auspicious morning of Pushya Amavasya. The Aradhana day of Sri Purandara Dasa, the 'Sangita Pitamaha' of Carnatic classical music. Srinivasa Nayak, a miserly goldsmith from Kshemapura (currently in Malnad region) who attained enlightenment through music and devotion.

Posting one of my favourite Dasara Pada rendered here by none other than Bharat Ratna MS Subbulakshmi.

The Purandara Mantapa in Hampi where Dasa is supposed to have composed many of his songs. Much of it is intact. It is a beautiful experience to sit in there and see the flowing Tunga.

A pillar inside has a sculpture of Dasa on it, though am not sure how old that is.

It is a fallacy that Purandara Dasa belonging to the Madhwa Sampradayam didn't compose on Lord Shiva. He did and many beautiful songs! Listen to Vid @AbhismRti and JB Sruti Sagar render 'Chandrachuda Shivashankara' in one of the older Margazhi concerts.
Absolutely beautiful!
Absolutely beautiful!

The credit for popularizing Purandara Dasa compositions in Tamil Nadu must go to the great Madras Lalithangi. She not only mastered them but also published a book 'Purandara Mani Mala' in Tamil. Her daughter, the iconic ML Vasantakumari continued her mother's legacy.
