Happy International Day of Women and Girls in Science
We would love to give a big shout out to all the #WomenInSTEM just out here being amazing every day of the year.
But today is a great day to remember why we even have #IDWGS2021

This years theme: Women Scientists at the forefront of the fight against #COVID19.
Yet #WomenInSTEM have been/continue to be disproportionately affected by COVID-19

Women (and in particular BIPOC) are far more likely to suffer from #ImposterSyndrome, a feeling like they do not belong or are a fake. This can also result in attributing any success to external factors like "I was lucky", "I had help" etc

Imposter Syndrome affects performance but can also lead to higher levels of anxiety and depression.
In astronomy, women who struggle with imposter syndrome were more likely to consider leaving the field entirely

Exposure to either implicit or explicit negative stereotypes of women has been found to negatively influence the grades and performance of people identifying as women. 5/11 https://www.researchgate.net/publication/254316354_Stereotype_Threat_and_Women's_Performance_in_Physics
Women are underrepresented in high-impact papers as first authors and their citation rates are less than male led articles.
Yet prestigious papers and citation rates are a key metric used to assess performance

Male applicants were considered more hireable, competent, offered more career mentoring and an average of $US5,000 more for a starting salary than IDENTICAL applications of women.

These biases start young.
When children are asked to draw a scientist, the vast majority draw the stereotypical view of a "middle-aged male in a white coat and glasses who worked in a lab"

In NSW, yr 11 and 12 science students currently learn of over 80 men and just 2 #WomenInSTEM
In Vic, there are 89 mentions of scientists and just 3 are women. All mentions are in Psychology
In ACT, over 80 scientists mentioned yet just 9 are women, again all in Psychology

Yes #IDWGS2021 is a great day to celebrate and recognise the incredible work of #WomenInSTEM but it is also a time to reflect and see how we can do better.
Our current system is systematically pushing out #WomenInSTEM and particular BIPOC.
They deserve better.

This #IDWGS2021, take time to research the specific issues facing #WomenInSTEM but also work to change those stats.
As @WomenInSTEMAu @lisaharveysmith said: "Change is a verb"
Let's do something about this.
