“My mom insisted on finding me a Black pediatrician when I was a child,” says UCSF’s Matthew Bucknor, MD. “That consistency of seeing a Black man in medicine every single year had a big impact on me. It normalized the possibility of a career in medicine.” #BlackHistoryMonth 🧵1/5
At @UCSFimaging, Dr. @mbucknor studies MR-guided focused ultrasound, a noninvasive way to treat tumors using sound waves. “I couldn’t imagine not having a career in science and health,” he says. “I’m inspired by my patients—their courage in the face of disease.” 2/5
Bucknor says he finds inspiration in the generations who came before him, whose sacrifice and perseverance paved the way, as well as those who will come after. “It’s incredible to bear witness to this moment." 3/5
“I’m excited about the level of sheer brilliance, passion, and determination I see in the next generation of Black people in science and medicine,” he says, “and what they might be able to achieve within institutions with a renewed commitment to promoting equity.” 4/5
