I want to create this (hopefully small) thread on the term Mormon, as I feel it has become necessary to speak about it. #DezNat
As many know, in October of 2018, @NelsonRussellM counseled us to start using the true name of the Church, as revealed by the Lord, when referring to its title and/or our religious standing.
This teaching took instant backlash from those who are against the Church, which continues to this day.
While the term "mormon" referring to the name of the Church or its members isn't inherently bad, and, in fact, was used proudly by members and leaders for MANY years, the fact still stands that the prophet has spoken the mind and will of the Lord on the issue, and that's final.
Additionally, people who are against the Church are playing right into the narrative of "mormon" being used by enemies of the Church. It doesn't help their case; it just shows disrespect.
Even when we were using the term "mormon," we were constantly counseled by our leaders to refer to ourselves as latter-day saints. We used "mormon" only as a term to help those unfamiliar with our beliefs. The term helped establish common ground.
To those who are unfamiliar with the true name of the Church nowadays, a great starting point for conversation is the Book of Mormon.
As for those who are against the Church and have taken an extreme stance against calling the Church by its true name, I couldn't care less what name you use. Just know, the only person you're making a fool of is yourself.
