Is autistic perfectionism actually an autistic thing or could it be a trauma response from being constantly told we're getting things wrong? Do we think maybe if we just try hard enough and do everything perfectly it could stop people from being mad at us?
Perhaps it's more of a both/and than an either/or. I think some autistic people who are less aware of, or simply don't care what others think of them, are often still perfectionists.
Maybe social perfectionism is just a roundabout way of saying masking?

Although non-social perfectionism such as wanting something tangible to be 'just right' rather than 'good enough' could be seeking predictability to compensate for living in an unpredictable world?
So again is this autism itself or a stress response?

I've a feeling there's a lot of chicken and the egg issues when it comes to what is actually autism and what is trauma caused by being autistic in a world that tends to hurt us. Especially considering we need to be decidedly not ok to get diagnosed.
So everything we know from autism research is based on what distressed autistic people look like and overlooks the autistic people who are coping well enough to fly under the radar.
(Disclaimer: I should be asleep and may well be talking complete rubbish, alternatively my need for this disclaimer could be my way of compensating for my fears that my late night thoughts are imperfect
