One of the most common issues when taking a pass set is the OL reaching outside of their frame during the catch phase, as opposed to maintaining their stance. See below for a screenshot taken from baseline videos of:

(2/9) Two movement strategies commonly seen in pass sets include:
Driving + Catching
Reaching + Pulling
It is important to understand that there is a spectrum to consider, as driving and reaching are not mutually exclusive, as seen in the video below

(3/9) Reaching your hip into full extension/outside of your frame in your pass set can cause a cascade of issues, including but not limited to:
- Opening hips
-
Force absorption
-
Ability to redirect
Now that we have assessed the "What", we can move on to the "Why" ...

(4/9) Pass sets are highly trained skills as they are unnatural. Moving opposite of your
field (w a person attacking you)
's your perceived threat, causing you to go native and grasp for safety. As a result, you don't "trust" the catch and end up reaching for the ground

(5/9) In this before and after video, you can see Stanford OL @wrouse19 staying in his stance throughout his set, leaving him in a great position to fight pressure, redirect, or continue on his angle
(6/9) While this is a good sign of mechanical progress, the isolation of the mechanics from the whole skill leave it unlikely to transfer to real ball until it is practiced in a situation that affords similar threats associated w the function

(7/9) Here, Boston College OL @_ZJ77 has gone from an isolated pre-planned set on air where he reaches to catch
tighter mechanics in an environment where he needs to perceive and take action. This provides us feedback as to if the newly acquired motor skill is "sticking"

(8/9) Multiple methods and constraints were utilized to take the athlete from A-Z, and while I will not be discussing the "How" portion of the topic, I hope the "What" and the "Why" has helped turn on the
