So this is the second case in a week of a major @DeadByBHVR content creator using racial slurs. This case is deeply problematic for reasons that extend far beyond his word choice. This perfectly encapsulates how pervasive casual racism and misogyny is in gaming. 1/ https://twitter.com/rapunzelhead/status/1359626323405201410
Reading that, It's striking how @Ussylis is more concerned about people not liking him than having his racist, homophobic beliefs challenged. And it's hilarious that someone w/ an ego that fragile is the first to start calling people "SJWs." Unreal. But also: 100% typical 2/
When things like this are exposed, I always hear a bunch of bullshit about cancel culture. But honestly: racist, homophobic people need to be exposed for what they are and folks can decide what to do with that info. If he wants to change: great! But it needs to be substantive. 3/
And it needs to acknowledge the harm that those "OPINIONS" (his words) have on people. Read this thread to learn why racial slurs are so problematic no matter what the intent. Normalizing racism and homophobia as an "opinion" is dangerous... 4/ https://twitter.com/mariachong/status/1358846935394754561
@AyrunTV: I know you recently pledged to do better in this space. I don't know what your plans are, but your words need to be paired with action. @anykeyorg is a good place to start for resources so you learn to ensure that your community is inclusive & welcoming for all. 5/
At this point, I would love to see content creators in this space work towards eradicating casual racism & misogyny in gaming by ensuring that their communities don't accept shitty behavior like this. B/c takes like this aren't benign and they aren't harmless. 6/
Furthermore, I wonder if gaming devs or platforms like @Twitch should mandate that their creators actively pledge not to be racist, homophobic pieces of shit. I don't think that's an unreasonable ask and anything less is tantamount to tacit approval of this behavior. 7/7
