It's day 3 and it's ASH Wednesday* !

Here we go. Today's Winter tree ID. #beastrees
Some people get paid by the word so use thirty when all they need is one: "candelabra"

(*actually next week. Don't worry, you've not missed Pancake Day or Tłusty Czwartek for that matter🍩)
1/4
It's nice to look at a tree from a distance and say "Think I know that".
Perky branches head out, swoop down, then up (like a candelabra).
Even when they're 'standards' stuck in an awful 'flailed' hedge (not now, Bernard), they still look up.
Smooth skin that wrinkles with age...
You'll be glad you stuck around. Here's the best bit. Buds and twigs are key in winter ID. Black, BLACK buds...

"each bud emerging cautiously, like the black snout of a badger, at the tip of every branch" (Roger Deakin)

Medium sized..? between our hazel & horse chestnut anyway.
Ash is a very strong, elastic wood so many legendary ash spears are waggled about in myths & stories.
Best ash story I've ever read is by @williamfiennes in "Why Willows Weep".
The worst is Chalara Ash Dieback: now set to kill c.80% of UK ash trees...
('don't have nightmares').
