1/n It is #AltExtUCD2021 Wednesday! @AGMcInturf & @alexcr_1 are discussing #SciComm & #SocialMedia! So follow along to get some tips & tricks (and feel free to tack on your tips & tricks so our students can see! #CrowdSourcing #LiveTweet
2/n @AGMcInturf starts us off with (my favorite #VirtualLearning tool) to get a feel for people's opinions about social media as a #SciComm platform. Takeaway: This is just 1 platform and 1 way to communicate your science! #AltExtUCD2021
3/n #SocialMedia can be quite powerful because it can have real-time dissemination of information that can have far-reaching interactions. Ultimately, "social media can be a tool that has pros and cons" - @alexcr_1. #AltExtUCD2021 #SciComm
4/n Shout out to @sciencewithtyus for being our OG #SciComm #Twitter professional! So how do you create your brand? @AGMcInturf is going to work through some steps!

1) Find your theme- who do you want to connect with? what do you care most about?
#AltExtUCD2020
5/n It will take time to build your network (the more you build the more likely you get out of your echo-chamber) so 2) address & discuss important topics. What kind of topics are trending? What do you care about? Choose a couple of themes & have people get to know you! #SciComm
6/n 3) Engage with others and remember that communication is a 2-way street! To effectively interact: don't be afraid to be your authentic self (even if it is somewhat filtered), be humble, stick to your brand, & have fun! #SciComm #AltExtUCD2021
7/n 4) Amplify other voices! You don't need to paraphrase or add your voice to stay with your brand. Support others & promote others by either retweeting, or retweeting with ⬇️ to emphasize the other person. #ScienceIsForEveryone
8/n Also, #InclusionMatters so think about alt. text in pictures and capitalize each word in a hashtag to increase accessibility! #ScienceIsForEveryone #AltExtUCD2021
9/n @alexcr_1 points out that if you can #SciComm in 280 characters that is catchy & concrete, you can communicate your science in any other way!

Also, if you want to expand your message further, hashtags & mentions can be powerful & help your brand! #AltExtUCD2021
10/n: #Empathy & theory of mind can be very important in crafting your tweets. Having relatable posts can help people identify w/ you (& you with them!). That can be your hook and then you can create a rapport with a broader audience & your #SciComm can reach further! #Compassion
11/n: #DYK that #SciComm & tweets are correlated with increased citations! @alexcr_1 is throwing down empirical research that shows PIs who engage on twitter with posts/emojis/gifs/figures are more likely to have higher citations!
