This week I was asked to be on TV for an interview about my job. When the journalist found out I work from home (not a lab), they were no longer interested. If you want to showcase diversity of #WomenInSTEM you have to showcase us doing what we actually do #IDWGS2021 (a thread)
So for International Day of Women & Girls in Science, I’m going to show you what I actually do in a day.. not just hold a test tube of blue water for the camera. Because not all scientists wear labcoats! Not all engineers wear hardhats! #whatascientistlookslike #superstarsofSTEM
1. This is where the magic happens! (Excuse my high tech monitor stand 😂). My team at @CellAgAustralia uses @SlackHQ every day to work together on different projects. First task today is writing a grant application for an event we’re running with @unimelb for @Aus_ScienceWeek!
2. Next up is reviewing @CellAgAustralia’s newsletter, scheduled for tomorrow! Our Media & Comms manager @NethmiYapa creates our bimonthly newsletter to keep you updated on all things #cellag - latest science, industry news, jobs and events! She also does her PhD full time 🤯😵👏🏽
3. Gotta take some time to keep up to date with the literature! Watching a @GFoodInstitute seminar featuring Dr. Ravi Selvaganapathy from @McMasterU on cultivated whole cuts of meat without scaffolds. I have so many open tabs (currently 43!!) of things to read and watch 😩
4. I've moved from my desk to the couch (she has range!!). This time working on an online educational tool we're developing at @CellAgAustralia. Being cryptic because it won't be launched until next month! It involves raising awareness of the key research challenges in #cellag...
5. First Zoom meeting of the day (quite rare for it to be this late in the day!). Victoria ( @TheSciToriusVIC) is a PhD student who reached out to me earlier this week to learn about job opportunities in #cellag 😍 She’s submitting this year & is keen to move into cellag research!
6. Finished the day preparing my notes for an upcoming talk on the science of #cellularagriculture 🥩 and that’s all folks! Not every day is the same in science, but here’s a snippet of my life as a scientist.
Tldr; The lab maketh not the scientist! #IDWGS2021 #SuperstarsofSTEM
