hi! i’m an astrophysicist, science communicator, & women’s health advocate & I’M TRYING TO GO TO SPACE! i’m joining the #Inspiration4contest to raise funds for @StJude & share my story with hereditary cancer.

help me get to space! ❤️🚀

more info: http://bit.ly/3aWPG6e
in short: i’m making this video because @StJude is creating the world’s first all-civilian mission to space
to help further the research hospital’s fight against pediatric cancer and other life-threatening diseases here on Earth.

and they have 2 spots open!!!!
so here’s why I’d love your support in sending me to space:

my goal as an Egyptian woman in astronomy is to bring the beauty of the cosmos to the world, challenge the narrative of what a scientist looks like, and inspire the next generation.
i fell in love with astrophysics because of the perspective that it offers us--the realization of how small we are, and how little our day-to-day struggles matter in the context of the Universe.

in short, the night sky offers a balm for the anxieties and fears I face every day.
as a carrier of the cancer-causing BRCA-2 genetic mutation, I have learned first-hand the importance of science literacy and advocating for myself.

at 26 years old, just 3 years after my dad was diagnosed with metastatic prostate cancer, I got a preventive double mastectomy.
my goal is to share my experiences to encourage other people affected by health risks to advocate for themselves. all too often, those with marginalized backgrounds are glossed over or not taken seriously, especially in healthcare settings.

it is my goal to change this.
as an Arab woman in the sciences, I hope to change the narrative of who can be a scientist and what a scientist looks like.
finally, I aim to increase science literacy around the world. i see it as our duty as scientists to share with the world what we have learned.
in the Era of Anti-Science (anti-vax campaigns, climate change deniers, anti-maskers, etc...) it is paramount for scientists to find effective ways of communicating with the public in ways that overcome the communication divides.
I hope to change this by sharing my passion with the world.

thank you so much for considering me and helping me get to space!
ps: sorry for the beginner-level Tik Tok video, this is my very first one.
