Since one again we're all talking about how Joss Whedon sucks, what we are not going to do is shame his fans, especially his marginalized fans.
Last time the "Joss Whedon sucks" train came around, I watched several queer friends of mine be told they were supporting abuse for talking about how important Tara & Willow were for them. I also got to watch rape victims be told they supported fictional rape.
The fact is, Joss Whedon was critical to mainstream feminist, queer, & kink-friendly supernatural media. And that sucks b/c God knows it was weak shit, but it was more than existed, & that means something to a lot of marginalized people.
Joss Whedon being an asshole is not a time to declare open season on his marginalized fans, to call them stupid for being fans in the first place, or to mock them for having strong emotional connections to a woman-centric media that turned out to be made by an asshole.
It's infuriating that every time a powerful man in nerd spaces is outed as an abuser, a whole lot of people take it as a great time to shit on nerdy fans who just wanted a little representation & clamored for the little that existed. Don't punch down like that.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, Firefly, these media gave us a lot of kick-ass women, vulnerable & loving queer relationships, neurodiverse characters, & a great metaphor for being an underdog. Joss Whedon, he can fuck off, but the fans of those worlds don't deserve kicking.
