watching this now - @RayForMayor @scottmstringer @ericadamsfornyc @mayawiley participating (Yang out due to covid) https://twitter.com/theNYCalliance/status/1359608512565940228
. @ericadamsfornyc tells hospitality crowd that he knows them well, not b/c he owned a restaurant but b/c he worked as a dishwasher. Hits theme he's presented to other audiences that he's "not a new friend" but "an old friend."
But those comments, like others Adams makes on the trail, appear aimed at differentiating him from McGuire.
. @mayawiley says she's soon going to present a plan for addressing commercial rent, given high rents have often been such a burden on commercial entities.
. @scottmstringer references the below breakfast with @ericadamsfornyc https://twitter.com/scottmstringer/status/1122883914807291904
Several candidates of course mentioning the need to get city government out of the way of commercial establishments, limiting fines, cutting red tape. @RayForMayor also mentioned sales tax breaks.
"when I win this primary," @scottmstringer says, he'll be ready to govern, "no learning curve, no training wheels" - also an apparent reference to McGuire, among others in the race who don't have government experience.
. @RayForMayor touts plan to provide small business grants. He says can't be low-interest loans b/c too many biz already deep in debt.
. @scottmstringer floats idea of reducing commercial rent tax burden on restaurants below 96th St in Manhattan, doesn't get specific but acknowledges it could hurt city revenue.
. @mayawiley pledges as mayor to be a cheerleader for the restaurant/hospitality industry.
. @RayForMayor pledges effort to reduce regulations; says he'll require a time limit on city agencies to do inspections/approvals/permits; says he'll offer biz more opportunity to correct issues that are flagged before having to pay fines.
Restaurant owner asks candidates about adding unfunded mandates - cites paid sick leave already in place & legislative proposal for mandated paid personal time off that appeared on the move before covid.
. @mayawiley doesn't take a position on paid personal time. Says she wants to listen to biz owners & protect workers, that she can bring people together to find compromise.
. @ericadamsfornyc says government too often institutes new mandates without enough implementation time. Says workers need good wages/benefits, but that if government is going to add mandates it needs to "find ways to alleviate your costs in a real way."
Like Wiley & Adams, @RayForMayor doesn't take a position on paid personal time legislation. McGuire touts plan for public-private partnership to help pay small biz payroll for a year in stimulating economic comeback.
. @scottmstringer says he's "a lifelong champion of workers' rights," wants to do more to treat workers fairly, when workers are helped they're happier, stay at jobs. But gov't needs to find offsets, he says, at both city & state levels. Also no position on paid personal time.
And @AndrewRigie notes none of the candidates took a clear position on paid personal time legislation.
This forum is a good reminder that restaurant owners are a special breed.
. @RayForMayor claims that he's never made a promise he didn't fulfill.
McGuire unfamiliar with the new cap on fees that 3rd party delivery companies can charge restaurants. Adams says yes make it permanent.
