every time there is an act of anti-Asian violence, I wonder how we will be used once again to advance a pro-police agenda, despite the fact that police have failed to keep our communities safe & have killed so many Black, latinx & indigenous folks. they've killed us too.
already, politicians are bottling up our grief and rage and selling it back as a shiny promise to keep us safe with more police, more prisons, less crime.
as our elders are attacked, they capitalize off pain & tragedy to incite fear & anti-Blackness.

i am hearing many call for more police & harsher sentences. a crack down on crime. but we cannot conflate police and incarceration with justice or safety. i want our seniors to be safe, too, but that safety cannot come at the cost of Black lives.
we must condemn individual acts of violence AND the systemic, institutionalized state sanctioned violence of law enforcement. they are two sides of the same coin. we cannot use one to defeat the other - we must fight against all of it.
this state violence is what causes our communities to be separated from their loved ones through deportation.
it is why our families suffer while 118,000 of our parents, friends & elders are locked up in prisons.

It is easy to demand convictions & harsh sentences.
It is hard to actually address the root causes of violence, to commit to the real day to day work of collective healing.
yet i am so inspired by the many AsAm & Black folks working in solidarity towards this everyday.

i am hella proud of how the AA community came together to demand that our cities provide resources for us to heal & build safety without turning to carceral institutions.

in oakland chinatown, folks are organizing a foot patrol to keep communities safe, with the emphasis that "it’s not just a patrol — it’s a stroll to walk around and shop and pick up trash and build relationships” https://docs.google.com/forms/d/12Re9XS3_MlazkZ6DvhAhhtJ3zjJBUiYshK-HqAAecpM/viewform?ts=60222a9d&gxids=7628&edit_requested=true
in response to violence, these are acts of love. they are unabashed, bold proclamations of resistance, a commitment to ourselves and to each other that we will fight for collective joy and liberation.
it is this love we have for each other that will keep us safe.

shout out to all the orgs that have been doing this work for years. if you want to build community safety, organize w/ them:
