In the context of militarization of borders deployed by others,Colombia proposed regularisation.'It is being praised as a historic and humanitarian example for Latin America' but it's also a pragmatic political step b/c it creates far greater possibilities/hopes at home+abrd🧵1/6 https://twitter.com/InvisiblesMuros/status/1359561801378193408
regularisation allows:A/migrants to participate, get more incorporated into the local society and to contribute socio-economically;B/puts Col on the international map as 'progressive' ally in terms of migration approach that the gvt hopes will bring more resources from outside,2/6
more funding from international partners-key for migration crisis that has been rather underfunded/wth insufficient capacities in relation to high numbers;C/international reputation turns more positive(both in respect to relations to US but also in relation to growing critique3/6
+international concerns regarding the killings and growing violence in Col/of 'not managing well' the peace deal);D/creates conditions for diminishing the power of illegal groups and intermediaries exploiting the irregularity conditions of migrants;E/make informal more formal4/6
F/allows Col govt to have more power to trace, control and govern mobilities of migrants with the proposed biometric data system(though this might be a bit of double-edge sword for migrants themselves in case the political will would change or data get abused in the future) 5/6
The decision for “Temporary Protected Status for Venezuelan Migrants” (ETPV) is simultaneously humanitarian, ethical and pragmatic.Let's just hope it will improve the dire situation for the migrants from Venezuela and for the 'receiving' contexts with all the worrying trends! 6/6
