the eighty hd conversation feels like it has wandered into the thickets that result from implying even a little bit that "socially constructed" == "essentially ephemeral, fake"
admittedly the distinctions that need to be made here are subtle but failure to do so is like the ontological version of what happens when long hair gets caught in a lathe
maybe part of the issue is that "diagnosis" is treated like "reification," that is, as a mostly terminological error. it's not! look at what "gender dysphoria" has come to mean
to take seriously the precept that there's no "self" separate from its mediation means that you can't treat diagnosis as merely separate from the people it's subjected to
to put it another way what if psychological states develop, in part, because of the conditions of categorization and subjectivization that also generate the need for diagnostic criteria
this means that you fundamentally can't attempt to address the problem at the level of diagnosis and hope to get anywhere. critiquing diagnosis misses the point entirely
the whole "mental illness is produced by capitalism" vs "I need my treatment to function" thing is so pointless because both are obviously true & that accepting that both of those things are true is to understand that to change the state of things we need an entirely new episteme
do I have suspicions in re my ADHD as reaction formation to having a gender defined by failure, a history of trauma that severed me from continuity, and so on? of course
can I change *that*? maybe?
in the meantime? vyvanse is helpful when I have deadlines
