Here’s the bottom line:
2/ Despite her nuance, I do think Stephanie understates the tension between freedom and virtue. It’s a constructive rather than a destructive tension, but a tension nonetheless.
3/ The continued existence of disparate philosophical camps within the American right even during the heyday of fusionism shows that the political coalition aspect was more secure than the philosophical consistency aspect.
4/ That being said, the cool thing about fusionism is that it offers a political-institutional vision whereby we don’t have to resolve this tension in order to live together peacefully and productively.
5/ tl;dr I think @sladesr is right in her conclusions, even if I quibble with some of her arguments.
