I keep thinking about an interview I heard this weekend with the actor who plays Colin in It's A Sin. The presenter said that you think Colin's quiet and innocent but you find out "he's actually quite promiscuous". And it's hard to know where to start with that assessment!!!
The *whole point* of that Colin storyline is to show that it only takes one time. HIV is a virus — it's not about being "good" or "bad". He had sex one time and, because it's bumming, he's "promiscuous". This is what we're up against!!
For what it’s worth, I don’t think it was said maliciously. But if that’s what even some people take from Colin’s storyline (because it was transactional sex?) then there’s so much work to do.
There’s no space for nuance on twitter. I think we need to bring people with us on this — not throw them under the bus for any misstep. It was an otherwise lovely interview about how great the show is. But language matters on HIV and the 80s still casts a massive shadow.
