They weren't allowed to come back in to the US, as some int'l flights were being blocked. So, they were set up in a hotel for several weeks while they waited to fly back. Botswana completely shut down then - they didn't even get to see their family while they were there.
They watched out the hotel windows and saw truly what lock down looked like. No one outside hardly at all. Absolute silence. Full commitment to quarantine.
When the US allowed their flight back, they flew into DC.
No one asked them anything about where they'd been.

No one tried to get them to quarantine. They had no instructions at all - they walked through the airport, rented a car, and drove back home to NYC.
They couldn't get over the stark contrast between Botswana and America and how seriously people were taking the pandemic.

That was in April 2020 & when they told me that story at the time, I couldn't imagine it being that different.
But now we know that this country failed.
That our leaders failed our people.
That our people failed our neighbors.

We're the shithole country that, a full year into the pandemic, can't even envision a 0-case day on the horizon.
When I was despondent the morning after Donald Trump won, I had many contacts that thought I was overreacting. They said "give him a chance, how bad can it be?!"

He couldn't put a mask on his stupid fucking face & tell Americans to do the same thing, which was the bare minimum he needed to do.
People on the right that want to object to spending huge amounts of money to fix this, to save people, to recover- YOU did this.
