The Anishinaabe call this body of water Zhoonya Gaaming, which means "Place of Shining Waters."(Thank you to @brando44 for sharing this.) More recently it's been known as Lake Simcoe (not after John Graves Simcoe but rather after his father). 1/
The two big bays of Lake Simcoe are named for colleagues of his father, Rear Admiral Kempenfelt and the infamous Captain James Cook. Cook, it so happens, was killed when trying to abduct Kalaniʻōpuʻu, the King of Hawaii.

Lake Simcoe has had a protection plan for 10 years now. The recreational value of the watershed provides an estimated at $420 million each year to area businesses. 3/
The #LakeSimcoe watershed is also estimated to provide up to $65 million in pollinator services, supporting plant cultivation, each and every year. These #ecosystem services provide a foundation for #Ontario's #foodsecurity . 4/
The Lake Simcoe Protection Plan is being reviewed, and the Ministry of Environment, Parks, and Conservation is hosting a virtual town hall. Register for free here: https://www.eventbrite.ca/e/virtual-town-hall-on-the-lake-simcoe-protection-plan-10-year-review-tickets-137870872491 5/
