There’s almost no point to talking about domestic vigilante violence against Asian people if you don’t connect it to this country’s 200 year old tradition of war in the Pacific
Yellow peril doesn’t exist in a vacuum; it’s an extension of imperialism & settler colonialism. We marked as racial foreigners bc the US must wage real and imagined wars against us to secure capitalism’s limitless expansion + consolidate settler rule https://evergreenreview.com/read/the-alien-and-the-sovereign-yellow-peril-in-pandemic-times/
So when we think about where this kind of racism comes from we have to look past discourse to material origins: war & overseas occupation, the US’ voracious consumption of Asia’s labor & surpluses, a media & state apparatus that exists to defend bourgeois property relations
As we talk about responses to anti Asian violence that don’t rely on the police, we also have to make the connection to war. In other words, you can’t denounce this violence and then cheer US escalation against China + DPRK, or militarization of “allied” neocolonies
