A graduate of the University of Chicago, #VivianCarterMason took a job as the program director of the #YWCA in Brooklyn, NY & later accepted the position of administrator of the city's Department of Welfare—becoming the first African American woman to ever hold this position!
She considered #MaryMcLeodBethune her mentor & mother figure, often calling her “Ma” in private—& Mrs. Bethune considered her one of her “daughters”. Mason continued Bethune & #NCNW’s work helping AA women break down barriers that often isolated them from mainstream America.
