Some defenses heavily deny the middle, while others square dodgers up more. Either way, offenses often still find a way to sweep middle if they desire.

Ensuring we get support from the right players is critical. So how can we help?

A quick thread 👇
1) Don’t Slide Off of the Drift

As players sweep middle, we have to be extra cautious of sliding adjacent off of “the drift” - this is an easy pass for a quick step down look before the defense can rotate.
2) Fill From the Bottom Up

The defender at X is critical in this equation. As players sweep middle and keep an attackmen below GLE, the defense can play 6 on 5 above GLE by filling up with the backside base defender.
3. Filling From the Bottom Up also Applies Throw Backs

Here’s a great example of the Duke base defender filling up on the recover to the pull pass up top. This is a nice series of Duke flowing with ball well and approaching at good angles to prevent the sweeps.
Compared to Alley Dodge

Help responsibility becomes clearer in the alley. Den was having early success on quick transfers through X and getting Duke hung, so Duke slid from the crease and pressed at X in 2nd half which seemed to help. Beware of back door cuts when extending X.
