what is epilepsy?
-
epilepsy is a common condition where sudden bursts of electrical activity in the brain causes seizures and fits
how many people have it / develop it?
-
1 in 26 people will develop epilepsy in their life time, not all as serious as others , however it is still quite common.
so what are ways to try and prevent this?
-
having a healthy sleeping pattern is extremely important , it reduces the rates of you developing it as it reduces stress levels , which can also cause you to develop epilepsy. -
alcohol and drugs are also ways epilepsy can be caused , if possible try and cut down on alcohol and drug use.
what are other causes of epilepsy?
-
epilepsy is often developed in an individual due to genetics, they can also be caused because of brain tumours , strokes , head injuries etc
if you are concerned for yourself or another individual, and unsure whether you have developed epilepsy, please get in contact with your primary care doctor as soon as possible to get a few tests to be safe.
now what are the effects/symptoms of epilepsy?
-
•uncontrollable shaking/jerking , these can be seen as fits
•losing awareness , staring into space
•body becoming stiff
•tingling in body
•collapsing
•unconsciousness
what can you do to help someone if they have a seizure?
-
call 999 if :
•first time having a seizure
•seizure lasts more than 5 minutes
•multiple seizures in a row
•breathing problems or seriously injured
if it is a more minor seizure you should:
•not panic
•carefully place cushion under the head
•loosen tight clothing around neck
•stay with them and talk calmly to them until they recover
•note the time it started and finished , keep diary to show doctor/specialist
