Just out of @EdinburghUni Senate and ready for a lie down but first a few links to things mentioned in my EDI update. Some will be UoE access only... /x
First is the recent NatureIndex paper from @knicollb (and others) on how we can use the flux in the system for good https://www.natureindex.com/news-blog/inclusion-time-covid-pandemic-how-to-seize-the-moment-for-change 2/x
This builds on the work we've been doing through @evidenceBase_IM for the last 2.5 years to promote a systems based approach to EDI https://evidencebase.org.uk/ 3/x
We ring-fenced part of our COVID response funding for EDI and have set up a College based fund for flexible funding to mitigate some impacts of the pandemic (ask your research office for details) 4/x
We used some of the funding to make more training available more flexibly, with three programmes for groups particularly affected - early career on precarious contracts; mid career facing research and work disruption and women of colour https://blogs.ed.ac.uk/iad4researchers/moving-ahead-with-your-research/supporting-researchers/ 5/x
We've also funded 4 secondment projects (3 being taken up by researchers) to look at improving communication and information flow; redeployment and staff demographics; careers support and support for managers. All resources will be open access https://blogs.ed.ac.uk/iad4researchers/moving-ahead-with-your-research/develop-your-career-develop-the-iad/ 6/x
These activities are written into our Concordat Action Plan (will be on our website soon - just need to get final sign off!) meaning we've built in accountability and visibility of progress 7/x
We're working closely with our friends and colleagues in @GrowingYourIdea to improve and develop our research culture. You can learn more here: https://www.ed.ac.uk/research-office/research-talent-and-culture/research-culture and make suggestions. PLEASE let us know what will help you 8/x
From our Research Culture pages you can also view the results of recent research culture survey - available via the Open Science Framework https://osf.io/ymx4z/ 9/x
We also spoke about our pride in appointing 40 new Chancellor's Fellows ( https://www.ed.ac.uk/news/2021/promising-research-talent-awarded-fellowships) and the work we'll do to support them but (perhaps more importantly) the many researchers who applied and weren't successful. We want to enable them for future success 10/x
...and we also want to embed the good practice that enabled us to appoint a far more diverse set of fellows that previously. This will link to our @evidenceBase_IM project which was a key influencer in the CF recruitment process adopted. 11/x
I also talked about the importance of our EDI communities and networks for ensuring we keep the momentum up and also embed EDI in all our practices and work. https://www.ed.ac.uk/equality-diversity 12/x
And finally, thanks to all who asked questions and made comments at Senate - I'm going to review these and every interaction we have on these subjects to make sure we are tackling what we need to. 13/13 ends
