After record voter participation this November, many governors and state legislatures have moved to make it harder for Americans to vote. As a civil rights lawyer, I've seen firsthand the damage these unnecessary laws do. To make our democracy more accessible we must pass #HR1 🧵
HR 1 is the most comprehensive democratic reform and anti-corruption legislation in a generation. It will help put democratic power squarely in the hands of the American people, eroding the power of dark money and making it easier and more secure for eligible Americans to vote.
Starting with making sure more Americans can register to vote by automatically registering every eligible unregistered American citizen, limiting the ability to kick registered voters off the roles, and allowing folks to register on Election Day.
HR 1 will also make it easier for Americans to cast their ballots by establishing a national early vote period, expanding access to absentee voting, and requiring states to notify voters of a polling location change at least a week before the election, something I introduced.
It's no secret that corporations have undue influence in DC and, this fall, North Texans had to suffer through the onslaught of misleading ads by dark money groups. This bill addresses these issues by increasing transparency and requiring clearer disclosures of who's funding ads.
To ensure elected officials are working with the best interests of their constituents, not themselves, top of mind, HR 1 enacts strict ethics requirements and conflict of interest guidelines, for members of Congress, the White House, and Supreme Court justices.
And by investing in election infrastructure, including voting machines made in the US, and election security, like cybersecurity protections, HR 1 will give all Americans the assurance they need to know their vote was correctly counted and their elections were secure.
Put simply, HR 1 will make our democracy function better for the American people, who it is intended to serve. I am proud to be a cosponsor of this bill and will never stop working to improve our democracy.
