I just want to say, you don’t have to like Dabi AT ALL to understand the authorial intent behind Touya’s story (especially when it’s being purposely portrayed in a sympathetic light.) /thread
A lot of people are missing the fact that Touya caught on to the fact that he was being “replaced” when deemed useless to achieving his father’s ambitions. Ambitions that shouldn’t have been placed on a child in the first place. And then, ripped away when he was deemed faulty.
I’m not saying you have to make parallels outside the story, but it does help a little, Dabi & Enji’s relationship parallel (and this is a popular theory) The Monster and Frankenstein’s relationship. The monster was rejected from his only life’s purpose and sought revenge!
Touya didn’t understand that it was bad to hurt his own body, all he knew was to live up to the only reason his father gave him to exist. I think it’s understandable that he AS A CHILD didn’t rationalize this at all. It drove him crazy, he wasn’t born that way.
(Some of y’all placing adult rationalization and common sense on a child who only knew one thing (live up to his purpose) are kinda concerning me but that’s another conversation..)
If you can understand that Enji wasn’t always a bad man, but his ambition to conquer All Might in place of number 1 drove him to do terrible things, why can’t you understand the same happened to Touya when Hori is quite literally laying the narrative down in front of you.
I think to reduce it ONLY to jealousy and being a brat is a heavy disrespect to all the work and NUANCE Horikoshi is purposely putting into Touya’s story AND the Todoroki’s as a whole. He’s not dragging it out for no reason and It’s not a black and white narrative.
Understandably, there’s a lot of beef in the fandom between stans but that beef really shouldn’t cloud your head to the story at hand,
I can tell this to my fellow Dabi stans as well, this is coming from one who actually truly enjoys Enji’s development in the story.
I’m gonna be honest, the fandom has gotten SO bad to the point where some of y’all only want for Enji to be retconned as a character just so you can rub it in the “other side’s” faces and say “he was always the good guy!”

When in fact that would kill ALL of his development..
Like if you care about his development, why not accept the places where he DID go wrong?? And not blame the victims of his actions/ideals.

(I’m not saying that is all of his stans, but I’ve seen a good majority of people like that coming out of the woodworks since chapter 290)
It is true that people have placed extra, non-existent crimes on Enji as well, that’s a valid reason to be upset!

but when Enji owns up to the crimes you personally think werent “worthy” of producing victims, and you downplay it, you’re ALSO trying to misconstrue the narrative!
Hori isn’t asking you if the reasons he puts behind his villains is a good enough reason, he’s not asking you if what happened was their own fault, he’s literally not asking you. He’s simply TELLING you, this is what happened. This is what made them this way.
Touya was a very stubborn CHILD, he didn’t listen. Endeavor shouldn’t have placed his own ambitions on a child in the first place. Touya didn’t have to be physically abused to be a victim of bad parenting and selfishness. These are all statements that can co-exist..
