King Shark of Dahomey Kingdom (Benin) tirelessly fought European colonialism and imperialism in Africa.

In 1868, France signed a treaty with his dad, King Glele. The agreement placed Cotonou under French control, but they were prohibited from enforcing their customs on locals.
France did not keep to their promise, and the local people didn't like this. The French were hoping to have a better relationship with King Shark when King Glele died, but he refused to do their bidding.

King Shark's motto was “the angry shark will terrorize his enemy."
He fought wars against the French in Cotonou, Dogba, Poguessa, and Oueme Valley with his strong army, including the Amazons of Benin, and his relationship with Germany

However in 1894, he lost the Battle of Adegon to France. The French took control of Dahomey kingdom afterwards.
King Shark was then exiled to the island of Martinique in the Caribbean. He spent most of the rest of his life there, but died in Algeria in 1906.
