Thirty years ago, the UK Government lifted the ban on LGBT+ people serving openly in the Diplomatic Service.

Until 1991, the UK barred LGBT+ people from serving the Diplomatic Service. Officials thought that the risk of blackmail was too high to allow anybody other than heterosexuals into the service.

Prior to decriminalisation in 1967, internal guidance stated that gay men were not permitted to work as diplomats due to the risk of blackmail by a hostile intelligence service. It was the closest the FCO came to an official “line” on homosexuality.
