I've seen this RT in my feed several times. Unless this is carefully hidden behind a special paywall, it's not true. Outright false. Disinformation. A lie. Maybe mal-information.

In any case, dangerous. This person should be banned from Twitter.
Based on the number of shares and likes, this has literally affected *at least* 10,000 Canadians, likely two or three times that.

M/Disnformation is very serious. Maybe the most serious problem we have as it affects every other problem like a multiplier.
Misinformation: you likely don't know it's wrong, often innocent

Disinformation: you know it's wrong, share it anyway

Mal-information: you create it to be wrong to serve a purpose
The person who created this tweet created mal-information.

The people who shared it knowing it was wrong participated in disinformation.

The people who shared it thinking it was right participated in misinformation.
Which (misinformation) is what @TurnbullWhitby was rightfully concerned about when he made the tweet that made @davidakin so angry.

But, come on, we all have to work together up fight this. Or we may not actually survive as a democratic society.
This requires the media to be willing to push back against it.

They can't fail us now.
Unless all reading this tweet make a point of sharing it several times, this explainer will not reach as many people as the original.

You see how it works?

It's boring as a lie. It's exciting as potential truth. No one is hitting retweet on *this* like an excited teenager.
There's a way to deal with this, but the will to do so must exist.
And look at it go. First pic just before I made this thread. Second pic just now. Check the numbers.

This is how our democracy ends if we don't find a way to address it.

See my pinned thread.
Oh my good lord.

This came from Bob Fife quote on @CTV_PowerPlay.

I don't quite know what to do with this except say that Fife should be fired and never allowed to work in journalism again.
The tweet is an unfaithful retelling of an unfaithful, unsubstantiated piece of punditry that doesn't appear in print anywhere.

It just makes you want to give up a little, doesn't it?
