Once again—the issue is *whiteness* & wealth inequality, not red v blue states. The blue state secession convo always ignores:
-how majority Black & Latino populations are in so-called red states
-Indigenous land claims
-same pattern of racism & inequality exists in blue states https://twitter.com/thenation/status/1359464745686949890
If people really care about democracy, then the solution is to defeat voter suppression & disenfranchisement of BIPOC communities & demand that the white power structures in every state stop exploiting Black & brown ppl as a low wage labor source for the capitalist economy.
The secession convo past & present is overwhelmingly white USA talking to itself & pretending that one half is superior to the other. But the entire reason the nation is in the condition it is 156 yrs after civil war is precisely b/c it’s not & white supremacy remains pervasive.
Those who stormed the Capitol on 1/6 came from all over the country. The largest contingent of police who participated came from Seattle, WA.
When ppl say blue states should secede b/c they’re subsidizing red states, they’re imagining a scenario where wealthy, white communities in blue states can further concentrate resources in their own versions of a liberal but still segregated utopia...
...It’s an extension of the ongoing mythology that the north is less racist than the south, ignoring how the wealth of the whole nation past & present is rooted in slavery & ongoing exploitation of BIPOC laborers. Blue states are hardly havens of democracy & equality for BIPOC.
My final argument on this topic—as many ppl also point out—is that the blue v red state framing is way too over-simplistic to be useful. This map is from a WaPo piece speaking to this exact issue. This is what USA looks like by voting precinct.
