Risk to children’s wellness is reduced to academic concerns.

You’d never know of the outcry from hundreds of doctors about children’s physical and mental health – or that the AAP has flagged a spike in childhood obesity – by reading it.

Learning loss gets brushed off pretty quickly. Low-SES kids were behind already, what's a little decline so that labor can move the ball forward, amirite?

You'd never know that losses have been measured, they're worst for remote, they aren't trivial... https://twitter.com/vkoganpolisci/status/1357055848883884039?s=20
Also erased: the Black and brown families who do want schools open. Minor details!

Here's what a Latina mom and Black dad in Chicago have to say about that. https://twitter.com/karenvaites/status/1355947764027420680?s=20
It also helps, when making the progressive case, to cherry pick the study with the largest Black-white delta (I guess, that linked website is mad-hard to navigate), and disregard the data points that show more nuanced gaps. https://twitter.com/JessicaCalarco/status/1359236003534417920?s=20
Overall, the debate is framed as skirmish in adult political battles.

It's a "rush to get back to normal, by securing the child care necessary to truly open the economy" – no more, no less. Interest group vs interest group.

And we all know kids can't vote or donate $$$.
Taylor highlights some really important issues when it comes to adult politics, and also when it comes to school maintenance and family relationships with school systems.

Those are very much worth our attention. Here's another great read, on point. https://www.nytimes.com/2021/02/01/world/one-thing-thats-missing-in-the-reopening-plans-of-us-schools-the-trust-of-black-families.html
As a lifetime Democrat, I hope leaders in both parties reflect on these issues, invest in school infrastructure, hire/elect district leaders/boards that address the legitimate sources of distrust among Black families, and find ways to listen more to underserved families.
Also as a lifetime Democrat, I simply cannot believe how much the needs of children are being erased at this moment.

The underlying message here, that progressive political gains justify the means of closed schools, is one I cannot stomach.
Apparently this tweet mid-thread has been flagged by some viewers as having sensitive content. Odd.

Appending screenshot.

@jack @TwitterSafety What are you doing to ensure folks can’t flag things they don’t like as offensive, as a silencing tactic? Cause this isn’t sensitive.
This isn’t the first time that a repost of @vkoganpolisci’s Ohio thread showed up as potentially sensitive to those with some content settings. And I find that suspect.
