Terrible to read U.K. shellfish industry is collapsing because of Brexit, all those livelihoods gone. Here are some oyster shell finds from the Thames Foreshore, an extremely common food staple for millennia. Roman elites particularly prized the British oyster for its quality.
Many oyster shells are found with round or square holes in them, no one knows why. Lots of theories though - hole made during the harvesting process, used for buttons, birds pecking at the shell to get at the contents, pilgrims returning from pilgrimage (Santiago Di Compostela.)
Here’s an excellent @ThamesDiscovery oyster shell blog if you’d like to read more about holey oysters http://www.thamesdiscovery.org/frog-blog/holey-oysters
