I am finding myself increasingly frustrated with the cost of clinical placements. Ignoring financial instability of lockdowns, supervision on top of fees, personal therapy, books, memberships.. is making me seriously question if I can keep going with training. #therapistsconnect
Thousands down the line this would be a huge impracticality, I question why there isn't more to support trainees financially. I am risking high debts to go into a profession I love, 2 years in and having to consider my options is disheartening.
A big concern is what are my prospects in the future if companies take advantage (due to their own financial limitations granted) of the free work they can get from trainee therapists. Will there be roles for me to earn and start of pay off debts accrued in training.
And with a mental health epidemic looming, what support is there for the trainee therapists who are training in the middle of a pandemic to their own financial detriment, more so in lockdowns with unstable incomes, to support people at the end of the pandemic when we graduate.
It seems to me this is feeding into the stigma of therapy being only for those who can afford it, as low income background trainees need to charge the current high rates of therapy to justify their own costs and debts.
