In study, 258/568 #COVID19 patients (45%) had gum disease (periodontitis). The odds ratios for COVID complications in patients with periodontitis were 3.67 for all complications, 3.54 for ICU admission, 4.57 for ventilator requirement & 8.81 for death https://www.dentistrytoday.com/news/industrynews/item/7756-gum-disease-linked-to-covid-19-complications

#periodontitis
Note that #periodontitis is linked to different systemic diseases as it can increase systemic inflammation & "periopathogenic" bacteria (that accumulate in periodontal pockets) can reach different parts of the body and cause complications

As stated in the article of @DentistryToday, if a causal link is established, maintaining periodontal health may become an important part in COVID-19 care. Oral bacteria in patients with periodontitis can be inhaled and infect the lungs, particularly when using a ventilator.
P.S. the above-mentioned odds ratios were adjusted for age, sex, smoking, BMI, diabetes and comorbidities.
Finally, some genetic factors that increase the risk of disease are shared between periodontitis and systemic diseases.

Could there also be overlap in gene variants that increase susceptibility to periodontitis and severe COVID-19?
