Here's my take on our city elections here in OKC tonight. Actual OKC turnout was abysmal. These elections were decided by Canadian and Cleveland counties, largely by people who do not consider themselves OKC residents, but happen to live in OKC wards.
In addition, it is quite clear with the results in the Republican primary in SD 22 and those in the runoff in Ward 1 that the far right wing is VERY fired up and showed up today. Even the moderate Rs struggled to gain ground.
I will absolutely say it. It is due time that we create more wards. It is UNACCEPTABLE that some of our wards encompass parts of core OKC and areas that take an hour to drive to.
Lots of ppl are going to be looking for answers. This was a continuation of November without hardly any motivation for those outside the fringes to turn out. There was even an ice storm in the middle of it to continue to depress turnout.
I knew going in today that I had NO idea what was going to happen because of the volatility of the weather, the pandemic, and the political environment. As a political consultant, it again felt like SO VERY MUCH was out of the hands of the campaigns and candidates.
Oh also.... It's pretty bad for these wards to be so absolutely giant and 100% reduces the power of voices of color. I personally want better for my city.
I will also add to this: @mollyooten absolutely dominated her primary tonight. She's a PHENOMENAL candidate running against a guy who is the farthest of the far right (see: supported Jan 6th insurrection). DO NOT BELIEVE THE MYTH that SD 22 is not winnable. It VERY much is.
But she can only get there if you all help out. Donate, knock doors, make calls, send texts. Literally whatever you want. Also donate to @SenateDemsOKCC because we will be 100% behind her.
