#FramingBritneySpears is a must-watch. Reliving how Britney (like many young female stars in the 2000s) was treated in the media — not just by tabloids, but establishment press — was horrid.
I couldn't help but think if it that would still happen today. For all of social media's ills, it allows stars like that to control their own narrative, and mob pressure online can create better media accountability. We see it now w/ the backlash to Diane Sawyer's 2003 interview.
I grew up with the pop culture of the 2000s. I still love the art. But I go back and watch pro wrestling from that period, and much of it is so cringe. The Britney doc highlighted it too. Most especially the way women were portrayed and treated. We never really reckoned w/ that.
The establishment press has so much less power and influence now. Everyone has their own microphone. And if you're a famous person who grew up in the 2000s and saw how people (especially women) were treated, why wouldn't you choose to control your own narrative instead?
This is a good thread highlighting just how bad things actually were. https://twitter.com/JorCru/status/1358544176606978048
