We need to complexify this discussion by adding layers of what religious dress can be removed and what cannot, who has the choices to remove dress and who does not. I have frequently been in situations where my Jewish companions remove their headcovering, but I cannot remove my headscarf. 2/
Religious dress is not a monolith. Sikh turban, Muslim hijab, Jewish hair wraps, yarmulka, so many other choices are often grouped together under freedom of religion but they function differently in the different faith communities. And of course, in the lives of individuals. 3/
To even be able to talk about choosing to wear or not wear a particular item of faith and how one is received with or without said dress is it’s own level in this discussion that must be acknowledged. /end
