Despite more vertical break ⬆️ and less horizontal ➡️, Civale’s sinker is 6th best in the MLB, according to @ryancloude ’s model.

So, if his movement profile is average, what makes it a special pitch? 🤔

1. He gets way more “sink” than expected from a pitcher with his slot.

His SI has a 1:00 spin axis, but his use of SSW makes it move like a 1:45.

Hitters rarely see a pitch move in that direction from that slot, making the pitch more of an outlier.
3. He has a 6-pitch arsenal (including a ✂️Cutter that uses SSW in the opposite direction and a 🌈CB with 16 in. of drop) that can go ⬆️⬇️➡️⬅️ and allows him to sequence his pitches to come out of the same tunnel and end up in different spots. https://twitter.com/PitchingNinja/status/1288207746572181504?s=20
As Jordan alludes to, the goal isn't to have a pitch that just looks pretty on an iPad.

True pitch design considers factors beyond H/V Break (regardless of tech used).

Approach angles, foot placement, how pitcher moves, and sequencing all play a part. https://twitter.com/_JordanKraus_/status/1358486406876827648?s=20
