Tough week for Canadian broadcasters, producers and crew. Here’s the thing: no one eats Mini Wheats because it’s a Kellogg’s cereal. They eat it cuz they like it. Such is the relationship between tv networks and creators. Viewers aren’t loyal to a network they’re loyal to people.
So to my fellow creators, keep creating. There are more outlets than ever for your creativity. People will find it. When TPB started on Showcase no one had ever heard of it. Same with Letterkenny on YouTube. People found it because it was good.
People don’t watch networks because of their impressive earnings in Q4. They watch because of the guy who makes them laugh or the gal who makes good points. Make the thing you want to make, put it online & let the ones that really matter decide if it has value: the VIEWERS.
Bet on the one variable you can control - yourself. And while the networks struggle with relevance, you’ll be choosing between sponsors because you made the thing you wanted to make and people LOVED it!
Lots of differences between Cdn and American TV. Budgets being the most obvious one. But I was surprised to discover in the US the amount of respect for creators. There’s an understanding that without a product the company won’t have anything to sell. Not always the case here.
I guarantee if @rickmercer had been on Cottage Life TV people would’ve watched.
In conclusion, keep making your delicious unique brand of cereal. And if you can't find another Kellogg's, start your own factory.
