If you call yourself a socialist or communist, you should be actively learning how to exist as part of a collective. Socialism is meant to liberate us from the brutality individualistic ideology has wrought. More individualism won’t save us.
The intersecting modes of oppression used by capitalism to perpetuate itself will not be overcome with any amount of individual altruism, or by the paper expansion of liberal rights. Only collective action can save us.
The problem is we literally don’t know how to behave as a collective. Our entire worldview is filtered though the hegemonic individualistic ideology we all exist within. We have to teach ourselves how to effectively collectively take action.
All of this being said, for me, DSA is the place to learn how to act collectively. It’s not a place to do charity, it’s not a place to push the democrats left. It’s a place to learn how to self organize and then organize externally.
One more thing: I don’t know when or why “organizer” became a dirty word on parts of the online left, but it literally means someone who works toward building collective power, which is the only that has a chance of saving this neo-liberal hellscape.
